A Saturday in the South End

The South End is my favorite neighborhood of Boston. I am currently manifesting a brownstone on Union Park St (so if you could visit my Etsy shop and make a purchase that’d really help me out, lol jk… kinda). I recently spent a Saturday in the South End doing all the things I love: sipping coffee, walking and shopping with a podcast playing in my ear.

If you’re looking to spend some time in this area of Boston, either alone, with your significant other, or with a group of friends, here’s what I’d suggest:

Start with a walk.I love just walking the neighborhood, weaving my way around the beautiful brownstone lined streets. During the height of the pandemic when walking outside was the highlight of my day, I’d start walking down Claremont Park (near the Five Horses Tavern), and round the corner at the end of the street to walk down Greenwich Park. I’d make my way to the next street, W Rutland Square, and grab a patch of grass in the adjacent park, Titus Sparrow Park. On a nice day, sip your coffee and people watch here.

Speaking of coffee, grab some at one of the nearby cafes:

Coffee

South End Buttery
Grab some coffee and croissant at this South End staple (note there is a location on Shawmut and then a smaller cafe for takeaway on Clarendon).

Greystone Cafe
You could also try Greystone for some coffee from the walk-up window but there will likely be a line!

Shopping

Then, do a little shopping. Last weekend I was in the South End and popped into two shops that I’d never been to but now would highly recommend!

Sault New England
The South End is one of two locations for Sault, the other is in Portsmouth, NH. They have the coziest, cutest clothing and accessories. The style is very New England. Think: Flannel! Plaid! Knitwear! Baseball caps! And lots of Boston-branded apparel (but not tacky or corny - super cute and subtle).

CouCou
This French children’s boutique had the perfect little gifts for my friends’ kids. There are toys (all wooden!), crafts, clothes, etc. I bought a couple of origami making kits which they’ll love.

Restaurants

Black Lamb
Chic but casual, American menu with a full raw bar! I had lunch here with a couple of girlfriends and it was perfect - it’s a cool brasserie type of environment. It felt fun but just slightly fancier than our normal haunts.

Burrow Bar
Casual and fun Mexican spot. They have several locations, I love their South End spot. It’s a really fun vibe. Their brunch is super fun!

Barcelona
A cool wine and tapas spot. They have several locations all over the U.S. I always love their charcuterie board. This is great for girlfriends getting brunch or dinner, I’ve also had a great date at the Barcelona in Brookline as well ;)

Wink & Nod
Sexy speakeasy that’s perfect for after dinner drinks!
